Author Guidelines

MANUSCRIPT STYLE

Manuscripts should not exceed 7,500 words (including references, illustrations, and tables). Use APA Style, 7th edition.  Please submit manuscripts in blinded format. Each year, the AMAE Journal publishes an open issue. Manuscripts are accepted and denied on an ongoing basis; thus, there is no deadline.

Illustrations

  • Illustrations (photographs, drawings, diagrams, and charts) are to be numbered in one consecutive series of Arabic numerals.
  • The captions for illustrations should appear on a separate sheet of paper.
  • All illustrations must be complete and final, i.e., camera−ready.
  • Drawings should be high−quality laser prints or should be prepared with India ink.
  • Either the original drawings or high−quality photographic prints are acceptable.
  • Artwork for each figure should be provided on a separate sheet of paper.
  • Identify figures on the back with author’s name and number of the illustration.

Tables

  • Tables should be numbered (with Arabic numerals) and referred to by number in the text.
  • Each table should appear within the body of the manuscript.

Abstract

  • Please submit an abstract that is no longer than 200 words.

Key Words

  • A list of 3−5 key words is to be provided directly below the abstract. Key words should express the precise content of the manuscript as they are used for indexing purposes.

BOOK REVIEWS

The AMAE Journal welcomes book reviews that are approximately 1,000 words in length and review one book. All books reviewed should be academic research studies. Book topics to be considered for review, in general, should reflect research and academic issues of importance to the education of Mexican-American/Latino children and families.  Topics related to this include, but are not limited to: immigration and education; the achievement gap; bilingual education; parent engagement; ESL/EL education; equity and social justice; critical theories (e.g., CRT, critical pedagogy); literacy and content area instruction; curriculum and instruction; policy; teacher education; and the sociology of education.  In addition, books considered for review should have a publication date that is no more than three years old.  The review itself should provide readers a critical, engaging, and informative discussion of the work and should follow APA style guidelines.

Book reviews submitted to the AMAE Journal should not be under review elsewhere nor previously published in other journals or outlets.

Suggestions in writing the book review:

  • Avoid a chapter by chapter summary of the work.
  • State who the intended audience for the book is and who would find it useful.
  • Describe the main ideas and major objectives of the book and how effectively these are accomplished.
  • Analyze soundness of methods and findings.
  • Make a comparison with other works on this subject.
  • Provide constructive comments about the strength and weaknesses of the book.

The header of your review should include:

  • Author(s)’ or editor(s)’ first and last name(s)
  • Title of book
  • Place of publication
  • Publisher
  • Year of publication
  • Number of pages
  • ISBN
  • Price (please indicate paperback or hard cover), if available

At the end of your review, please include:

  • Your first and last name; institutional affiliation; country

ENSURING A BLIND REVIEW

To ensure the integrity of the blind peer-review process for submission to this journal, every effort should be made to prevent the identities of the author(s) and reviewers from being known to each other. This involves the authors, editors, and reviewers (who upload documents as part of their review) checking to see if the following steps have been taken with regard to the text and the file properties of each document:

  1. The author(s) of the manuscript have deleted their names from the text, replacing it with "Author" and year in the references list and in-text citations.
  2. With Microsoft Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties of the file. We recommend contributors search and view various free, online video tutorials.
